Many “experts” will tell you, ”Geographic tongue is a common tongue problem that normally responds to topical steroids” they often add “antifungal and antibacterial medications may be used for symptomatic cases and topical or systemic cortisone or prednisone may also be effective”.

In other words, spread some steroid paste on your tongue and it will look better.

At first you may think “that sounds good… maybe I have finally found a cure for this problem!”

But if you listen carefully… the next statement you hear the “experts” say should send up bright Red warning flags and clanging alarms! “We do not know the cause of geographic tongue and treatment does not permanently cure it”.

Wait a minute what’s that, you say? Throw some steroids at it and maybe it will go away, for a little while? Aren’t steroids dangerous?

In addition to not curing the problem, steroid use can cause you many other problems! Some of them are much worse than the Geographic Tongue itself! You do not want to start using Steroids without having all the facts.

How steroids work-

Steroids work much like normal hormones in your body. They are basically a synthetic copy of the natural steroid, cortisol, which is produced by your adrenal glands. But, the naturally occurring version is regulated by the body… while the synthetic version is not.

Topical steroids can cause a great deal of side effects, many of which can be permanent.

Experts say “Side effects of steroids can occur when they are used for too long a length of time. Potent steroid side effects can be seen 2 weeks from starting treatment.”

So according to this too long can be as little as 2 weeks!

Some of the side effects you can see are:

Thin Skin A major effect of topical steroids is that it stops collagen being made. Collagen forms a mesh of fibers within the dermis giving the skin its strength and structure. Without collagen your skin gets thinner. (Imagine a tongue with thin skin, sounds a bit like the problem we are trying to cure!)

Blood vessel effects They can cause small blood vessels in the skin to dilate, making them more obvious.

Acne Acne can occur in the areas that are treated with steroids. This is reversible and can occur at any time after starting treatment.

Tinea incognito If a fungus infection is treated with a steroid then the fungus can spread more quickly and become widespread. It is then known as incognito as it is difficult to recognize as a fungus infection. (unfortunately, many people with Geographic Tongues already have fungus problems, why would you risk making it worse?)

Other Problems associated with steroid use:

Thrush This is a yeast based infection of the tongue causing white fuzzy patches on your tongue. This is a typical problem for people with Geographic Tongue and taking steroids only makes it harder to cure!

Skin Problems including rough skin and severe acne. Geographic Tongue is already a “skin problem” often present in people with eczema, do you really want more skin problems?

Baldness Steroids tend to speed up the balding process, you already have a “bald tongue” why would you want a bald head too?

Psychological problems Long term steroid use has been known to cause many psychological problems including “roid rage” and depression. Geographic Tongue is depressing enough without taking drugs to make you more depressed!

Among males it can also result in “feminization”, which includes the increased tendency toward fatty deposits, extremely soft muscles, lowered sperm count, and the development of breasts.

Among females it can result in “masculinization” which includes deepening of the voice, thinning of the hair, baldness, anxiety, depression, and increased aggression.

Also associated with Steroid use:

Increased risk of heart disease

rapid weight increase

hormonal imbalances

growth defects

headaches

kidney problems

liver problems

Impotence

High blood pressure

Stomach aches (including nausea, diarrhea and vomiting)

That’s quite a list of potential problems! But that’s not all… How about: immune system dependency resulting in:

Tiredness,

Being run down

More prone to viral infections, including pneumonia.

Plus if all these problems were not enough… based on my experience taking steroids may actually make the underlying problem of Geographic Tongue worse! (although it masks the symptoms making it look better… temporarily).

According to nutritional experts topical oral steroids can cause deficiencies in the following vitamins:

Calcium

Chromium

Magnesium

Melatonin

Potassium

Selenium

Vitamin B6

Vitamin D

In addition, taking Alcohol or Sodium with these steroids can be “DANGEROUS”. OK, so maybe you can avoid alcohol (no more mouthwash or cold medicine either!) but Sodium? No potato chips, popcorn etc? I don’t think I could survive!

And finally there are a few other things that may cause problems. Some of them probably won’t be a problem for you like taking the herbs, Alder buckthorn or Buckthorn. But others might be an issue… like Diuretic herbs and Laxative herbs which you may take without even knowing it if you take diet supplements or herbal teas.

Do you drink Grapefruit juice? What about Licorice? Protein? Vitamin A? Vitamin C? Vitamin K? or Zinc?

How can you live without protein? And Vitamin C is in all types of fruit! So lets see… you can take this stuff (steroids) and your tongue symptoms may get better for a while, but then you can’t eat protein, fruit, potato chips, popcorn, take vitamins, herbs or even eat grapefruit …

I don’t know about you… But somehow this doesn’t sound like a very good solution to me!

Plus based on my research reducing your exposure to some of these vitamins might be exactly the opposite of what you need to do to really cure the problem! (not just mask the symptoms).

Which do you prefer… a safe natural cure or a risky chemical that masks the symptoms and could be dangerous unless you stop eating almost everything?

There is a better solution!

Hairy tongue may sound like something straight out of a science fiction movie, and it does look every bit as frightening as its name suggests. However, there’s no need to be alarmed. Hairy tongue is harmless and easily treatable.

Hairy tongue, or lingua villosa, is a fairly common condition that is usually caused by an overgrowth of bacteria or fungi in the mouth. This overgrowth prevents your tongue’s skin cells from shedding, aggravating the buildup in your mouth. As the name suggests, it causes your tongue to look black, and in some cases even brown, white, green or any variety of color.

Why is it hairy? Your tongue’s surface is covered by what is generally known as the papilla, which is basically cone-shaped projections on your tongue. There are four kinds of papilla that can be found in your tongue, namely:

the foliate papillae, which can be found at the base of your tongue

the fungiform papilla, which distinguishes the five tastes

the circumvallate papillae, which can be generally found at the middle of your tongue

the filiform papilla, which covers two-thirds of your tongue. It does not contain taste buds, and its function seems to be mainly abrasive in nature.

One of your body’s functions is to shed the outer shell of your skin, called desquamation. This includes your tongue and in the case of hairy tongue, the overgrowth of bacteria or yeast impedes your tongue from shedding old cells to replace them with new ones. This results into hairlike growth or extensions on your tongue, a combination of accumulated bacteria or fungi, and old skin cells.

Causes

Many habits and conditions contribute to the development of hairy tongue, but it’s usually caused by poor oral hygiene translating to bacterial and fungi buildup in our mouths.

Other causes of hairy tongue include smoking tobacco, drinking too much coffee or tea, dehydration, using medication or other products that contain bismuth, excessive use of mouthwashes, alcohol, dry mouths or a lack of saliva and even radiation therapy to the neck or head. It may also be caused by your inability to produce enough saliva in your mouth and dehydration. While hairy tongue is observed to occur more to avid coffee and tea drinkers as well as tobacco smokers, there is no definitive study on what the exact cause of hairy tongue is; however, it’s been generally agreed upon that you have a higher chance of getting hairy tongue when you’re older due to the cumulative effects of those who are long-time smokers and coffee-drinkers.

Hairy tongue may also present itself in people who take intravenous drugs or are infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV.

Hairy tongue is not painful. Most people do not feel any discomfort at the onset of hairy tongue; however, they may feel a tickling feeling at the roof of the mouth, a metallic taste in the mouth, halitosis, nausea, and in severe cases, gagging.

People who have hairy tongue may also be susceptible to a secondary infection of Candida albicans, also known as mouth thrush. You may have developed this if you feel a burning sensation on your tongue.

Treatment

Teeth and Mouth Care. Good oral hygiene is usually the key to preventing and even getting rid of hairy tongue. Brush your teeth three times a day. You should also brush you tongue gently twice a day, using a soft toothbrush. You may also use a tongue scraper or even an inverted tablespoon to thoroughly clean the area. Brushing your tongue will wear away the overgrowth of pappilae that’s built up in your mouth

Water World. Drink plenty of water to keep your mouth clean and to prevent your mouth from going dry. You can also rinse your mouth with diluted peroxide water, that is one part peroxide to five parts water. Rinse it again with water afterwards. You can also use salycilic acid or apply topical retinoids to your tongue.

Creams. Hairy tongue may also be caused by a fungal infection, and you may use antifungal creams to treat it accordingly.

Diet. Alter your diet. Your diet may be composed of excessive soft foods so add some variety and more roughage, as soft food won’t clean off your tongue effectively. This food usually pertains to those with a harder, rougher texture such as apples and pears.

Kick the Habit. Hairy tongue is most likely to occur to those who drink coffee and tea heavily, as well as tobacco-smokers. If you fall under one of these categories, lessen your coffee and tea consumption, if you cannot give it up completely, and smoke less. Giving up tobacco smoking also has other health benefits so do consider doing that as well.

Go Pro. If the suggested treatments do not work, consult your dentist or doctor. If your hairy tongue is caused by bacteria, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics as treatment.

Tthe infected pappilae may also be removed using techniques such as carbon dioxide laser burning and electrodessication. Don’t worry, both procedures require a local anesthetic and the infected tissue will be scraped off using a special tool. Carbon dioxide laser burning is usually used for surgical procedures on your skin because your skin absorbs this light very well.

Keep in mind that hairy tongue is different from a condition called hairy leukoplakia, a condition where the side of your tongue appears to have a white fuzzy or corrugated patch. This is usually seen in severe cases of immunodeficiency — that is, if your immune system is very weak.

Hairy tongue, while widely considered a benign condition, is not something that you’d want waking up to. After all, your hair belongs on your head, not on your tongue. As always, prevention is always the best cure, and practicing good oral hygiene, brushing your teeth and tongue twice a day, keeping yourself well-hydrated, and having moderate, if not less consumption of coffee, tea and tobacco, will go a long way in helping you get rid of that nasty hairy tongue.

Article complements of howtogetridofstuff.com.

Editor’s Note: As noted above, Black Hairy Tongue can be a result of Fungal infections. These include Candida or Yeast. If you look closely at the picture above you can see the coating on the tongue is actually white around the edges. In order for fungal infections to become this serious it has to be systemic (throughout your system) already. Simply treating the symptom (the tongue) is short-sighted and probably won’t work in the long run (although it may help in the short run). Watch this brief video on treating systemic problems.

Although yeast infection (known by the names of Candida, Monilia or Thrush) is in fact a very common condition, (as three out of four women develop it at some point in their lifetimes), it is little discussed. Most people regard candida infection as a ‘on the surface’ problem that should be treated with creams and antibiotics whereas few are aware of its potentially risky complications.

Yeast Infection is first and foremost an internal problem. Like most chronic conditions, there is never one cause for this fungal problem and thus yeast infection cannot be permanently eliminated using medications or creams that work superficially and fail to tackle the root factors that trigger the formation of candida infection in the first place.

The problem is that the majority of yeast infection sufferers choose to leave it in the hands of others: Doctors, pharmacists, drug and over the counter industries. They willingly choose NOT to take responsibility for their candida condition, for their health and for their own body.

If you suffer from yeast infection then you must have experienced the confusion stemmed from conflicting advice and from information overload. Honest information about vaginal yeast infection or any other type of candida infection is harder to come by than ever before, and nearly everyone has been misled at one time or another. I know I have. I wasted literally thousands of dollars on candida treatment programs that didn’t “work out” and anti-yeast infection products that didn’t do anything.

Furthermore, to successfully navigate through today’s jungle of misleading, dishonest and conflicting information, you’re going to have to become a very shrewd and discriminating consumer.

There are in fact, alternative, cheap, safe, natural and holistic health practices and methods necessary to permanently eliminate the symptoms of this disease and cure the root internal cause of yeast infection regardless of its type, location, or level of severity.

To effectively overcome candida infection, you need to be aware of the real cause of yeast infection and be able to identify its symptoms. You need to know how to self-test and diagnose your candida condition, learn about the dietary principals needed to maintain a candida free environment and about the complimentary treatments that will help you battle against the negative effects and complications of your yeast infection.

By educating yourself about the steps you need to take in order to deal with your candida infection condition and help your body heal itself and control the fungal overgrowth from the inside out you can and will eliminate the pain, annoyance, humiliation and frustration associated with this condition and feel more in control. Additionally, as a side benefits you’ll feel more energized, healthier and vibrant. You will enjoy improved digestion, enhanced vision, and healthier hair, skin and nails.

Knowledge is power. Embrace it. Share it and apply it and you will be yeast infection free.

There is a big difference between adrenal fatigue and adrenal failure. Adrenal failure as the word implies is a total shutting down of the adrenal glands resulting in Pigmented Tongue and/or Addison’s Disease.

Adrenal fatigue is simply a case of overworking your adrenal glands through everything from an over use of stimulants like caffeine to stress and simple things like constant distractions just “wearing you down”. Typical symptoms of adrenal fatigue are:

Waking up exhausted and struggling to get out of bed.

Feeling like a “zombie”, never quite alert

Inability to focus

Colds hang around for weeks zapping what little strength you had

Decreased Libido

Failing short term memory

Unfortunately, most people when faced with tired adrenal glands do the exact WRONG thing making their systems worse and further draining their poor over-worked adrenal glands. The adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys and are sort of the size of a triangular walnut. They release hormones the hormones cortisol and adrenaline. Most people are familiar with adrenaline and the rush that comes with the fight or flight reaction. But cortisol is equally important in fighting off disease and inflamation. And many corticosteroids drugs are simply a synthetic version of cortisol.

Unfortunately, when you take these synthetic corticosteroids you actually supress the natural production of cortisol. Which is why you absolutely have to taper off of them slowly or you can permanently damage your adrenal glands. I had personal experience almost doing that myself. I had been on Prednisone® for a long period of time due to Crohn’s disease and then was away from home without my pills for a day and a half. And when I went out into a very hot day the additional stress made me feel something I had never felt before or since. Everyone knows what a kidney punch feels like and this was something like that. Somewhere deep inside my lower back (at the top of my kidneys) the only way i can describe it, is that it felt like someone was squeezing a lemon and wringing it dry. It was very strange! Fortunately, I was able to get my pills shortly after that and I didn’t suffer any long term damage but I was fortunate because it could have been extremely serious with me ending up with Addison’s disease.

The Adrenal Gland is made up of the adrenal cortex and the medulla. The adrenal cortex actually has three layers with three distinct functions. The outer layer produces hormones that regulate the blood pressure. The middle layer produces the cortisol. And the inner layer produces DHEA which is a precursor to the sex hormones. Inside the adrenal cortex is the mudulla which is where the adrenaline and noradrenaline are produced.

Noradrenaline is responsible for the fight or flight response boosting attention, increasing heart rate, triggering the release of glucose to provide quick energy, and increasing blood flow to the muscles. In modern society these responses can be to non-threating situations like having to deal with your boss or even just watching a movie. When they are constantly triggered but not used it can result in adrenal exhaustion. Basically the adrenals are over worked and under paid. Resulting in the symptoms listed above. By “underpaid” I mean that they aren’t receiving the nutrition they need to be able to do their job.

By addressing the overworked and underpaid issues you can drastically improve you energy levels, feeling of alertness, immunity, and libido.

So I’m not sure whether these things would be obvious to everyone. Interestingly some of his hints were the same things my grandmother told me many years ago but I never knew why but Jon gave some very good reasons for them. And bringing them back to mind has made me more conscious of trying to do them again.

But it’s not all old information. I learned something in just the first chapter! Did you know that three quarters of your energy is used to process your food? I didn’t! Jon goes on to explain how to make your digestion more efficient so you can free up that energy for other things.

Dear Tongue Sufferer,

You’re stuck! You’ve visited doctor after doctor (or website after website) and they all say the same thing… your tongue problems are no problem. They’re benign… nothing serious… nothing to worry about… no treatment is necessary.

So why are you still looking?

Because you know deep down inside that “they” are WRONG!

There has to be a solution. A tongue that looks like raw hamburger or has rough ugly patches, white rings, taste buds falling off, a black (or white) coating is not just ugly and nasty but it can’t be healthy, can it?

You know other people don’t want to look at that mess. You don’t even want to look at it! So how can others not be grossed out and disgusted? Sometimes it’s even painful… not just to look at… but it actually feels painful as well!

Those doctors have a lot of nerve saying it’s NOT serious. Some have gone so far as to say that it is “all in your head”. Well it’s NOT all in your head! It’s in your tongue or in your mouth and it is a real problem. It’s actually a sillent epidemic. Approximately 3% of the worl’s population is suffering with geographic tongue alone and that’s not counting all the people with other tongue problems.

And YES there is a real solution! It seems like when ever they don’t know the answer to something… they tell you it is “all in your head” or some other nonsense. Don’t believe it!

Who am I… and why can you trust me when everyone else is saying the exact opposite of what I am telling you?

My name is Tim McMahon and I’ve been where you are today and I’ve done it. I’ve kicked Geographic Tongue out and have helped hundreds of other to do exactly the same thing.

Here is what one of those people has said,

Hi Tim,

My daughter is 98 % back to normal… It took 3 weeks for her tongue to improve. At first it kept getting worse and I felt like giving up. Thank you very much. Your book and advice was the answer to my prayers… Thank you! Her geographic tongue is no longer! Christine and Sylvia

But perhaps that was just a coincidence it would have gotten better anyway… right?

Dear Tim,

I got geographic tongue while pregnant and still have it (I am still nursing). It has gotten worse. At first I was wondering if your system would work on pregnancy induced geo tongue but I have to tell you this- I started on the treatment you mentioned and my tongue cleared up in two days!

I cannot imagine that it could be a coincidence. I have not had a new lesion begin and it’s now been five or six days. I don’t think I have gone that long without something flaring up in a long time. I will be curious to see if I need to continue taking it after I quit breastfeeding. Anyway, I am so happy and appreciative. Thanks for your help! Karen Trevino

Now I have to admit two days is unusual! Normally it takes 7-10 days for a tongue to replace it’s surface. Actually it is doing it all the time. Your tongue is actually an amazing organ. It is almost like a starfish that can replace it’s limbs if one gets broken off.

Your tongue can (and does) replace it’s surface. It has to… In the normal course of eating you may burn the surface or scrape it or bite it. So your tongue is designed to constantly be rebuilding itself. And in the normal course of events, given the proper “building blocks” it does that quite well. The problem comes in when it doesn’t have all the blocks necessary to build with.

Imagine trying to build a brick wall and you know you need 100 bricks…

But you only have 90… or 80… or 60…

What do you do?

Well you start building and you get half-way done and you start substituting what you do have… maybe a lttle extra mortar here and a little extra there… but before long you realize if you keep that up you won’t have enough mortar either. So what do you do? Maybe a small rock or pebble will do… but now the brick wall isn’t as smooth as it used to be. Maybe you have to start using mud and sticks instead of bricks… and before long your nice, straight, new, brick wall is a lumpy, bumpy, mess!

That’s exactly what is going on with your tongue on a day in and day out basis. Your body is constantly trying to rebuild itself, replacing worn out and damaged parts but if you don’t give it the nutritional building blocks it needs… it can’t just stop and wait for you… it has to do the best it can with what it has.

So it “makes do”… your body skimps here and substitutes there. It allocates resources to where they are needed most.

Let’s see should I send those nutrients to the brain or the tongue?

Hmmm, let me think I guess this time I’ll choose the brain.

Not exactly, the brain, heart, liver, and almost everything else takes priority over your sense of taste. Perhaps it’s even a survival mechanism. If you can’t taste maybe you won’t be so picky and you will be willing to eat something you normally wouldn’t… and maybe that bad tasting something will have the nutrients your body needs that you can’t get elsewhere.

So now you may be wondering how I discovered the secret to repairing sick tongues…

That’s a good question. It all started when I was a teenager…

Back then, my dad worked for Pan Am (that dates me a bit since they went out of business in 1991), but anyway because my dad worked for the airlines we were able to travel quite a bit (a habit I have tried to keep up by the way). One year we went to Ireland and Germany… another, we went to Mexico. And that trip to Mexico is where my troubles began.

It seems that during that trip, I picked up a bad case of “Montezuma’s revenge” or traveler’s diarrhea. It was the worst case I have ever had… it seems like I spent half the trip in the bathroom. But after a while I seemed to recover. The operative word there is “seemed”…

Throughout High School, I had recurring bouts of intestinal problems and was diagnosed by my family doctor as having an “Irritable Bowel”. According to him I was too stressed out about school and so the problem in my stomach was really in my head! (Like I said before when they don’t know the answer the problem must be in Your Head).

Well, I didn’t buy that, since my problems didn’t go away during the summer and life for a high school kid spending his days swimming and hanging out on the beach on Long Island isn’t all that stressful!

But things got progressively worse and eventually I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. The diagnosis didn’t help much Doctors now had a name for it… but I continued to have problems. Eventually, I made it through a private engineering college in Upstate New York, where I learned the keys to doing good research… which eventually led to saving my life. But I’ll get to that in a minute.

You see, like most college kids… I got by eating a lot of junk food and I put on a bit of weight. I started college at 120lbs and ended at 135lbs. But after college, the Crohn’s disease got progressively worse and I started losing weight. Eventually, a friend of mine actually accused me of being anorexic…

But the fact of the matter was it was just too painful to eat!

I would eat a few bites and then be in such pain that I would literally roll around on the floor. Obviously, it was difficult to eat under those conditions. I couldn’t go out for longer than a couple of hours because eating was so painful. And I always had to plan my trips so I knew were the closest bathroom was (because I never knew when the “runs” would hit me). So I went to doctor after doctor. And during this time I developed white patches on my tongue that seemed to migrate around. I later discovered that it was a combination of thrush (yeast) and geographic tongue.

During the treatment process for the Crohn’s disease I found that antibiotics killed the thrush (temporarily) but once I stopped taking them the thrush would come back worse than ever!

Eventually… slowly but surely… I went from a healthy active 135 pounds down to 95 pounds and looking like something out of a concentration camp. My body was so weak my hair started falling out.

Remember I said that your body prioritizes the use of scarce resources? It seems, hair is not high on the priority list either.

I finally convinced a doctor he had to do something… or I was going to waste away to nothing.

So I had surgery. The doctor removed about 1/3rd of my intestines and believe it or not afterward I was feeling wonderful …

I was fortunate, I found a surgeon that knew the benefits of nutrition (at least in theory) and I convinced him that rather than just giving me clear sugar water in my IV, how about putting some vitamins in there? He agreed and I made sure the nurses in the hospital didn’t miss a single one. If they tried to give me the clear stuff, I made them take it back and bring the yellow one with the vitamins in it! And the doctors and nurses were amazed… I healed in “record time”. Imagine that… Someone with a steady stream of vitamins heals faster than someone living on sugar water alone. “Who’d a thunk it?”

For the next year I was on “Cloud Nine”, going to the beach, building muscle, running, exercizing, having a great time doing all the things I hadn’t been able to do for the last couple of years… it was wonderful! Except that after the surgery, I began developing a really bad case of Geographic Tongue and so on one of my follow-up visits with the surgeon I asked him about it and he nonchalantly said, “Oh, we removed the only portion of your intestines that absorbs B-12 so you are probably deficient in that… you will need to take injections for the rest of your life.”

Uh, well wouldn’t it have been nice if you had told me that before?…

Not that it would have prevented me from having the surgery but I could have started on the injections earlier and had less problems…

But then I may not have discovered ….

After starting the injections I found that my Geographic Tongue was gone! At least as long as I took the injections regularly. That was my first clue that Geographic Tongue can be nutritionally based! (Unfortunately, since everyone is different… B-12 isn’t the only cause but it is certainly a good place to start.)

So I started using the research skills I had developed in college to research nutrition and natural ways of healing. Not that I avoided doctors all together… because after about a year the pains started coming back! I was devastated. It was one of the worst days of my life. I had put on a bit of weight by then and I didn’t want to go back to being a walking skeleton! I had just started enjoying life again… It wasn’t fair!

And in addition to my stomach problems, my geographic tongue was getting worse again.

So that was lesson #2- Listen to Your Tongue

The first lesson I learned was that vitamins can help your tongue improve. And the second lesson was to actually pay attention to what your tongue is trying to tell you. Don’t stress over it, it’s not a major catastrophe, it is just your tongue trying to tell you something. But you do need to pay attention.

You need to do something different than you have been doing lately. Something has changed… something isn’t right… maybe you are under more stress physically from sickness or work. Maybe it is mental stress from worry or dealing with sick relatives, etc or even emothional stress.

Whatever it is your body is no longer getting enough nutrients to keep up with the rebuilding process. Maybe you’re being bombarded by bacteria or viruses or yeast. And you may need to reduce the stress, get more sleep or give your body something that it is missing. But you can’t ignore it! Or it will get worse, and not just your tongue other things will start to give way.

Once I learned this secret…

Now by keeping an eye on my tongue I can tell when I might be coming down with a cold or virus (or when I have just forgotten to take my vitamins for a while). And I can head it off before it gets too bad. But that’s not all…

When the student is ready the teacher appears…

You may have heard the old saying, when the student is ready the teacher apears. Well, in my case the teacher was a real estate agent. You see…

During this time I had moved from New York (where I thought the “best” doctors were) to the back of beyond… where it would probably be impossible to find good health care, or so I thought. When I first moved to Bedford, a small town in central Virginia between Lynchburg and Roanoke, I was still in the process of recovering from my surgery. The fresh mountain air was wonderful, and life was good. But it wasn’t perfect. Something still wasn’t right. I had a white coating on my tongue, I knew it wasn’t those same old bald patches with the white rings around it… it was something else.

It turned out that all the antibiotics and steroids I had been taking for years had killed off all the good bacteria in my system and by now the “Yeast” or “Candida” had taken over. So even though I was able to treat the geographic tongue with vitamin injections… the thrush continued to get worse and eventually the Crohn’s disease came back as well. As the thrush got worse, my overall system got weaker and my body wasn’t able to deal with the outside stresses, so the slightest little thing would “put me over the top”… I developed food allergies, fatigue, mold allergies, my body just didn’t have the reserves to handle anything extra… I was going down hill fast.

Thrush is just a visible sign that Candida is all over your body, it was taking over my digestive system, poisoning my blood and overall weakening my system.

But providentially the lady who was our real estate agent said she had just been reading a book on yeast and it sounded like that was what I had. And I should get the book. So once again I started researching. I guess someone was watching out for me, because it turned out that one of the doctors mentioned in the book as specializing in Yeast ran ”Mount Rogers Clinic” a small doctor’s office way out in the boonies of Virginia. And Mount Rogers was exactly two hours and forty minutes away from me. No back roads even it was big highways most of the way, just hop on US-460 to Interstate 81 and I could be there. WOW!

I’m sure I wouldn’t have gone all the way to Virginia to this clinic had I still lived in New York, but this was perfect. The doctor believed in looking at things the typical establishment ignored and he specialized in Yeast problems, what more could I ask for? So I made an appointment and spent half the day on the road (there and back) and half the day at his clinic. He did a thorough exhaustive exam and recommended Nystatin for the yeast. But he used the commonly prescribed drug “Nystatin” in an entirely different way. He explained that the regular way is to swish the liquid around in you mouth for a few seconds and then swallow. But he told me that this is almost useless. Plus, he said, that most doctors prescribe it for much too short a time so the problem comes right back.

I don’t have time to get into the whole thing here but if you are interested, I cover the full details on the proper way to kill yeast and restore the good bacteria in my book.

Anyway, my yeast was so bad that I had to start with an almost microscopic dose of Nystatin.

And it started killing off the yeast all right… but it made me sick as a dog.

Once again the doctor didn’t tell me everything. It seems that there is something called a Herxheimer’s reaction. If you kill off the yeast your body has to eliminate all those dead yeast and that can actually make you feel worse for a while. (It seemed to me the yeast weren’t going to give up without a fight.) They were making me sick trying to convince me to go back to my old habits of eating sugar which fed them and made me feel better. Well, anyway, it would have been nice if the doctor would have warned me this was going to happen… I would have been prepared for it… well maybe he did and I just wasn’t listening.

So after a call to the doctor, I was encouraged to continue on for a little while longer… it was actually a good thing that I was feeling bad! The nasty critters are losing the battle…

Anyway, after a week or so, as the yeast population got less control of my system and I started feeling better. So I was able to increase the dosage, and before long my tongue no longer had the thick white coating and I was doing much better.

It’s Baaaaaaack…

Unfortunately, once again, the good times didn’t last and my Crohn’s disease came back. So I had to try to find a new Gastroenterologist (stomach and intestines doctor). I was fortunate in find a young doctor in the big city of Lynchburg (pop. 50,000) who wasn’t afraid to try new things.

He did some tests to confirm that the Crohn’s was back (and it was) and he said, “We found that this medicine works in some cases of Crohn’s disease but we don’t know why, do you want to try it?” I jumped at the chance! I would do anything not to have to go back to the pain and suffering I had gone through before.
So he prescribed a medicine called “Flagyl” 3 pills a day for a total of 10 days. But this time I didn’t just blindly follow the doctor’s advice and pop some pills. Before starting I went to the library and did some research on my own (we didn’t have the luxury of the internet in those days). I found that Flagyl is used for a variety of things. First, I found it is used to treat alcoholics. It seems that it makes you sick to even smell alcohol while taking Flagyl. But I didn’t think that was the reason it helps Crohn’s disease. So I kept looking…

Then I found that it is used around the world to kill intestinal bacteria. Hmmm, my problems started with that problem in Mexico… So I developed a plan to introduce good bacteria into my system after killing off all the bad stuff with the Flagyl. It worked! Another step in my system of promoting health was forming.
So the first step I found in controlling geographic tongue is nutrition, and the second step is to listen to your tongue and the third step is to develop healthy intestinal “flora” by eliminating the bad bacteria and yeast and replacing them with good healthy bacteria… This promotes better digestion… which in turn results in better absorption of nutrients and better overall health.

Over the years I was able to expand on that basic formula and then one day I was talking to my friend Allison…

Allison began losing weight. At first it looked good on her (I thought she’d gone on a diet or something) but before long I knew there was a problem. She said she had pain when she ate. That sounded familiar so I asked if she had Crohn’s disease… and she said no… the doctor’s said her problem was fibromyalgia which was causing her pain whenever she ate.

So like in my case, she would stop eating before she had gotten enough calories to maintain her normal weight. And somehow this resulted in geographic tongue for her too.

Since the doctors weren’t much help, I knew I had to do something!

So I began putting together some of my old research into a report that I could give to Allison. In addition, I turned my efforts toward finding even more information for my friend.

It became a quest, an adventure, a search for the Holy Grail of health…

Well sometimes my wife says I can become a bit obsessive. Anyway, I spent the next two years compiling all sorts of information that I would periodically give to Allison. And by the time I was done I had 145 8½ x 11 pages of useful information on all types of tongue problems.

Allison was absolutely thrilled with all the information I put together for her… here is what she had to say when I emailed her the information in my report.

WOW!!!!!! This looks great and exactly what I’m dealing with… and there is actually a name to it! I really like my doctor, but it makes me wonder why he doesn’t know this! … Sometimes I feel you are the only one who really knows what I was going through because you experienced it!– Thanks, Allison

Yes, She really put all those exclaimation points in there. To say she was happy was an understatement.

In my quest to find every scrap of information on geographic tongue and other tongue problems, I even found a real live medical doctor that had developed a nutritional therapy for his patients with Geographic Tongue.

So it wasn’t just me after all… there were actually doctors that had come to the same conclusion I had. And I began finding research in places like Japan and even Scotland that tied fancy sounding things like ”recovery from taste receptor disturbance”, (say what? Oh they must mean bald patches on the tongue) to various specific vitamins and minerals. Things like:

A Doctor in England says,

A specific mineral deficiency can cause a pale fissured tongue.

A Vitamin deficiency that can cause a sore painful fissured tongue.

A recent study in Napoli, Italy found

A link between a “miracle antioxidant” deficiency and burning mouth syndrome.

Tests on rats showed,

A taste abnormality appeared quickly when there is even a slight deficiency of another mineral.

The same mineral resulted in lingual (tongue) nerves sensitivities (tongue or mouth pain) and has even been linked to tongue or throat cancer.

A Scottish study on 25 Geographic Tongue patients showed that, supplementation with this same mineral cured almost all cases.

Plus other studies have shown,

Another vitamin deficiency can cause a painful sore tongue with a smooth appearance

Cheilosis (A disorder of the lips characterized by fissures, especially in the corners of the mouth) has been tied to another vitamin deficiency.

So research is finally building to show what I found many years ago, and the pieces of the puzzle are finally coming together. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could have all of these pieces in one place? Well now you can. Since, I spent hundreds of hours putting all of this information together you don’t have to. You can have it all in one place. So that you can benifit just like Jon. Here’s what Jon had to say in his own words.

Hi Tim,

I have suffered from Geographic Tongue ever since I was about 7 or 8. There have been some good spells and really really bad spells.

Many years of seeing my doctor came to no result, I’d never really been able to pin it down to something that I was eating. Which is where the doctors and I thought the problem lay.

I tried mouthwashes and stopping eating irritative foods like baked beans and oranges. Which only slightly curbed the problem.

I felt that I was stuck with the problem for the rest of my life and that I’d never be able to move on. It was as though the medical profession had drawn the line in its research and had just sent out a generic answer to give all patients with the condition – “if it doesn’t hurt, then it’s not a problem”.

Then when I was nearly at the end of my tether I found your “Healthy Tongue Secrets” book on the internet and found that there are millions out there suffering like me.

On August 19th I bought your Healthy Tongue Secrets book and began looking for solutions based on the premise of treating it from the inside – out rather than just treating the tongue externally.

Your book has taught me ways of dealing with my problem and how to deal with the problem that the medical profession couldn’t throw a cure at.

After only a month, it is much better already! As you can see from the before and after pictures!

Thank you for saving me…YES, saving me. Without your hard work and e-book I’m not sure the condition I would be in today.

I have suffered geographical tongue for perhaps two years. My doctor said, “You picked the wrong parents, it’s nothing to worry about, it’s painless.” Sound familiar? I tried to forget it but it became increasingly harder to do.

I searched the internet for info and gathered bits and pieces but nothing concrete. I had all but given up when I tried, years later, to search the internet again. I wasn’t hopeful because I had looked before. But this time I found your site…the site that would change my life in more ways than one…

In eight days I am totally changed!! By the fourth day I had reversed all my symptoms including that horrible depression my doctor said was menopause. It wasn’t menopause at all!

I thought I was losing my mind and to make matters worse I was battling an extreme bout with GT.

I am a changed person and I owe it all to you. What a difference you’ve made in my life. I want you to know that I am SO happy to have found your site.

I am sending a before and after shot of my tongue. I wish I had taken a shot a day or two before I took this one on the 12th of May. It doesn’t look too terribly bad but it was.

White Fuzzy patches on the tongue could be one of two or three different things. The first is called Thrush. It is caused by an overgrowth of Yeast or “Candida Albicans” in the body. It can be the result of antibiotics killing off the “good bacteria” that keeps the yeast in check. Yeast is generally found only on the top surface of the tongue although patches can occcasionally be found on the sides of the mouth, lips and various other moist surfaces and on other parts of the body. Often babies will get thrush on their tongue and mouth and candida can also be a cause of ”diaper rash”.

The papillary structure of the top of the tongue provides many crevices and a large surface area where microorganisms and food particles, etc. can accumulate. These micro-organisms of the tongue can influence the make up of the flora of the entire mouth. Normally the top of the tongue is either pinkish or has a thin white coating. By thin I mean it is almost clear and not fuzzy at all. Almost like milk.

Many people have asked me, “Why did you spend hundreds of hours putting all this valuable information into a book?”

That is a long story beginning many years ago…

Back when I was a teenager, my dad worked for Pan Am (that dates me a bit since they went out of business in 1991), but anyway because my dad worked for the airlines we were able to travel quite a bit ( a habit I have kept up by the way). One year we went to Ireland and Germany… and another year we went to Mexico. And that is where my troubles began.

It seems that during that trip to Mexico I picked up a bad case of “Montezuma’s revenge” or traveler’s diarrhea. It was the worst case I have ever had, it seems like I spent half the trip in the bathroom. But after a while, I seemed to recover. The operative word there is “seemed”…

Throughout High School, I had recurring bouts of intestinal problems and was diagnosed by my Doctor as having an “Irritable Bowel.” According to him I was too stressed out about school and so the problem in my stomach was really in my head! Well, things got progressively worse and eventually I was diagnosed with “Crohn’s Disease”. The diagnosis didn’t help much and I continued to have problems. I made it through a private engineering college where I began learning the keys to doing good research which eventually led to saving my life.

You see, I got by like most college kids I ate a lot of junk food and put on quite a bit of weight. But after college, the Crohn’s disease started acting up again and I started losing weight. A friend of mine accused me of being anorexic but the fact of the matter was it was just too painful to eat! I would eat a few bites and then be in such pain that I would literally roll around on the floor. Obviously, it was difficult to eat under those conditions. So I went to doctor after doctor. And during this time I developed white patches on my tongue that seemed to migrate around. I later discovered that it was a combination of thrush (yeast) and geographic tongue.

During the treatment process for the Crohn’s disease I found that antibiotics killed the thrush (temporarily) but once I stopped them the thrush would come back worse than ever! Eventually I got down to 95 pounds and looking like something out a concentration camp. At that point I was desperate and I finally convinced a doctor to do something and that something was surgery. He removed about 1/3rd of my intestines and afterward I was feeling wonderful … I could eat again!

Except that after the surgery, I developed a really bad case of Geographic Tongue. And so on one of my follow-up visits with the surgeon I asked him about it and he nonchalantly said oh we removed the only portion of your intestines that absorbs certain vitamins so you are probably deficient in that… you will need to take injections for the rest of your life.

Uh, well wouldn’t it have been nice if you had told me that before? Not that it would have prevented me from having the surgery but I could have started on the injections earlier and had less problems but then I may not have discovered…

The Nutritional Basis of Many Tongue Problems

Interestingly, after starting the injections I found that my Geographic Tongue was gone! At least as long as I took the injections regularly. That was my first clue that Geographic tongue can be nutritionally based! Remember I said that my Geographic Tongue started before my surgery… well that portion of my intestines was diseased and wasn’t absorbing nutrients properly then either. Unfortunately, since everyone is different, it isn’t the only cause but it is certainly a good place to start. (Actually, I have found at least a dozen different tongue problems that are documented to be specifically related to nutritional deficiencies. Things like Bald spots on tongue, Beefy enlarged tongue, Bleeding gums, Burning tongue , cracked tongue, tooth-marks on tongue, Mouth ulcers, Purple or magenta tongue, Red Tipped Tongue, Scalloped Tongue, Shiny smooth Tongue, and a White-coated tongue, plus many more.

If you think you can’t possibly be deficient, don’t be so sure. My wife was just talking to our chiropractor the other day and he said…

95% of Americans are deficient in zinc alone.

And that’s not surprising since a recent USDA study showed that only 4% of Americans are getting the minimum recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of their essential vitamins. Another US Government survey found that out of 21,000 people surveyed, NOT ONE of them managed to eat the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of the ten basic nutrients studied.

It’s hard to believe not one out of 21,000 are getting all the vitamins they need…

But when you think about it, maybe it’s not so hard to believe. What with eating habits today, all the “junk food” and all the chemical fertilizers used to grow it…

But it’s not your fault, even if you try to eat healthily… did you know that you would have to eat 60 servings of spinach just to get the same amount of iron as in one serving in 1948?
So what are the odds that you are getting what you need? Pretty slim right?

Once I discovered the link between Nutrition and my tongue…

I started using the research skills I had developed in college to research nutrition, and natural ways of healing. Not that I avoided doctors all together… because after about a year the pains started coming back! I was devastated. It was one of the worst days of my life. I had put on a bit of weight by then and I didn’t want to go back to being a walking skeleton! In addition, my geographic tongue was getting worse.

During this time I had moved from New York (where I thought the “best” doctors were) to a small town in central Virginia. So I had to try to find a new Gastroenterologist (stomach and intestines doctor). I was fortunate in find a young doctor who wasn’t afraid to try things. He did some tests to confirm that the Crohn’s was back (and it was) and after another year of “conventional” treatments, he said, “We found that this medicine works in some cases of Crohn’s disease but we don’t know why, do you want to try it?” I jumped at the chance! I would do anything not to have to go back to the pain and suffering I had previously had.

So he prescribed a medicine called “Flagyl” 3 pills a day for a total of 10 days. But this time before starting I did some research. I found that Flagyl is used for a variety of things. First, I found it is used to treat alcoholics. It seems that it makes you sick to even smell alcohol while taking Flagyl. But I didn’t think that was the reason it helps Crohn’s disease.

Then I found that it is used around the world to kill intestinal bacteria. Hmmm, my problems started with that problem in Mexico… So I developed a plan to introduce good bacteria into my system after killing off all the bad stuff with the Flagyl. It worked! My Crohn’s was gone, my overall health was improving and my tongue was doing much better! And so another step in my system of promoting health was forming.

Two Steps to Eliminating Geographic Tongue

So the first step I found in controlling geographic tongue is proper nutrition.

The second step is intestinal health which includes developing healthy intestinal “flora”. Thus ensuring proper absorption of nutrients and better overall health.

How I Started Sharing My Discovery

A couple of years ago, Allison, a friend of mine began losing weight, at first it looked good on her (I thought she’d gone on a diet or something) but before long I knew there was a problem. One day while we were discussing her problems she showed me her tongue and all those painful memories of wasting away and anxiously searching for a solution to my problem came flooding back.

I knew I had to do something to help her. It turned out that Allison had fibromyalgia which caused severe pain whenever she ate. Naturally, not being “into” pain, she would stop eating before she had gotten enough calories to maintain her normal weight. And somehow this resulted in geographic tongue, so I began compiling some of my old research into a report I could give to Allison. In addition, I turned my research abilities toward finding even more information for my friend.

As I found more and more pieces of the geographic tongue puzzle, the project expanded and seemed to take on a life of its own. Eventually it covered a variety of tongue problems, as I found more and more inter-relationships between the various tongue problems and health in general.

The Tongue is the “Health Meter” of the Body

One of the interesting facts I discovered was that your tongue is actually kind of like a health meter for the body. Naturally, its obvious that a healthy body has a healthy tongue but a weakened body has a sick tongue. For thousands of years doctors have been asking patients to stick out their tongue and using the signs and conditions they observe to help determine the overall state of the body.

When the body needs something it starts a chain reaction that results in the tongue showing the symptoms. The symptoms could be a white coating, or cracks, or even bald patches with white rings (as in Geographic Tongue). Think of your tongue like a “Gas Gauge” indicating when your body is low on something.

Once you know how to read it, you will know what you need to do to return your whole body to health and then your tongue will also return to normal. This is why treating the tongue as the disease rather than as the symptom will never work!

Once I had the Key… I had to share it.

Once I had done all that research compiling this report for Allison, I couldn’t live with myself if I kept this important knowledge to myself so I have decided to share my secret discovery with those who are really interested in getting well.

So I have put this site together and compiled all my research into a huge “Tongue Encyclopedia” called “Treating and Beating Geographic Tongue and Other Tongue Problems”.
Retired Schoolteacher and geographic tongue sufferer Dorothy Chalmers of Scotland says,

“Well done in producing this excellent resource for the world! It is pure genius… your book is absolutely fantastic!”

If your child has developed bald patches or a “map-like” appearance on their tongue you have probably already heard the diagnosis Geographic Tongue. Most Doctors will tell you that it is nothing to worry about. They will also say that it isn’t painful, but many children will tell you otherwise, often by refusing to eat, drink or brush their teeth.

Research indicates that approximately two percent of the world’s population suffers from Geographic Tongue. But in some areas of the world as many as 14% of the children suffer from Geographic Tongue.

Geographic tongue in children and toddlers generally starts around the age of two or three but has been seen in children even younger.

I have found two primary types.

Type One

The first type of Geographic Tongue is related to a lack of one or more key vitamins and/or minerals. Often as children start eating on their own they are “picky eaters” or at least avoid certain foods with the key vitamin and so aren’t getting all the nutrition they need. Conventional wisdom says that if children are given a wide variety of foods to choose from they will eventually balance their own diets.

Perhaps at one time this was true when all the foods were healthy and full of vitamins but it certainly doesn’t work that way anymore. Given the choice today most kids will live on candy and ice cream, the more sugar the better, the emptier the calories the more they like them.

Did you know?

A Recent USDA study showed that only 4% of Americans are getting the minimum recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of their essential vitamins?

Another US Government survey found that out of 21,000 people surveyed, NOT ONE of them managed to eat the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of the ten basic nutrients studied. (It’s hard to believe not one out of 21,000, so what are the odds that your child is getting what they need?)

On any given day, 91% of Americans don’t eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables.

Because of soil depletion, chemicals, genetic modification, etc. the food you eat doesn’t have the nutritional value your grandparents got from eating the same food. (For instance, incredible as it seems… today you would have to eat 60 servings of spinach to get the same amount of iron as in one serving of spinach in 1948!)

65% of Americans don’t get the minimum daily requirement of Zinc!

So it is important to be able to get your children the nutrition they need to keep their tongues healthy.

It’s very hard for me to hear things like:

“My 3 year old son has geographic tongue and I am trying to get rid of it for him so he will start eating again… he eats less than an 80 year old with cancer!! It bothers him so bad!!”

or

“I’m from Philippines … My daughter seems has a geographic tounge. It started when she was one year old. She is two years old now …”

But I get theses types of emails all the time. Which is why I have put together a low cost book specificially designed to help parents eliminate Geographic Tongue in their children.

The good news is that children often “outgrow” GT primarily because they stop being picky eaters and start getting all the nutrients they need from their diet. But they shouldn’t have to suffer in the mean time. If your child’s geographic tongue is due to a nutritional deficiency it can be stunting their physical and mental development and you shouldn’t wait hoping it will go away.

One desperate grandmother found that our nutritional approach worked amazingly fast:

Hi Tim,

I have meant to email you for ages to let you know the success we have had in curing my 5 year old grand-daughter’s geographical tongue. She had it for 2 years, and last February she simply could not eat her dinner one night as her tongue was so sore. I tried the internet to help my daughter a few years ago as she had it too, but with no success. However this time when I looked I found your advert and immediately downloaded the book, although I must admit I had reservations about it helping, but I was desperate because a child had it… and it worked in 2 days.

Thank you very much for your help.

Christine

Note: Two days is not typical. It usually takes at least a week and sometimes longer to see results. But children have amazing recuperative powers. In this case the child was not ill or having difficulty absorbing the vitamins she simply wasn’t getting what she needed. Once she was given the proper building blocks her body went to town resolving the issue.

Type Two

The second type of Geographic Tongue may be even worse because it is much more difficult to locate. It is the result of one of many chemical irritants, a natural irritant or food allergy. These will not go away until you eliminate the cause. Chemical irritants often affect children whose immune systems are compromised in some way…

Like Jasmine from New Zealand.

At the age of two, Jasmine caught a case of hand, foot and mouth disease. Although Jasmine lives in sheep country, doctors are convinced that hand, foot and mouth disease (which primarily affects toddlers like Jasmine younger than five) is caused by an entirely different virus than hoof and mouth disease that affects sheep and cattle. After that she became susceptible to chemical iritants and her tongue was very painful even after the virus was eliminated.

But after reading my information this is what her dad Sam had to say…

“within a week her tongue is completely healed. I am amazed and wish I’d had a diagnosis sooner… the initial results are out of this world, I just wish I had photographed it to show the change. She’s a very different little girl now, there are no tears or arguments when it comes to teeth brushing now!!”

Sam

But your child does not have to suffer from a terrible virus like Hand, Foot and Mouth in order to be affected by chemical irritants, sometimes it is something as simple as an allergy.

In it I examine the evidence and show what has worked in treating my own Geographic Tongue and how I have helped thousands of others to eliminate their Geographic Tongue as well. The book examines several cases of childhood geographic tongue including Jasmine (age 3 ½, New Zealand) and Ethan (age 3, West Virginia) both mentioned above.

We also look at Sylvia’s daughter Christine (pictured on the cover) who took 3 weeks to get “98% back to normal”, and we will take an in depth look at Grandma Christine’s ”magic elixir” whose 5 year old grandaughter’s Geographic Tongue went away in only two days. Christine discovered this after reading one of my other books primarily directed at adults.

The Mommies’ Guide to Eliminating Geographic Tongue specifically looks at the causes of Geographic Tongue in children and examines the ingredients in Grandma Christine’s magic elixir so you can replicate these miraculous results even if this elixir isn’t available to you locally. In this book, I will not only help to alleviate your fears but give you detailed advice on how to eliminate Geographic Tongue in your child.
